Chapter 5 Summary:

This chapter included some very interesting topics. After reading the chapter I learned some of the differences between push technology and pull technology. I use things like email everyday but I had no idea that it was a perfect example of push technology. The email server is able to send notifications to the client (me, in this case) without me explicitly requesting it. I stopped for a minute to reflect on what that means and came to the conclusion that the email server must have a very large database of stored email usernames that it pulls from in order to be able to push information out without the email address sending a request to the email server. This chapter also introduced me to the term “Lurking”. In the digital world this term seems to have a different meaning although it’s very similar to the real world definition of the word. It means to read and observe online discussions or content without actively participating or contributing. Since this practice is very common it is very important to be mindful of what we post online, since we don’t know who could be lurking and viewing our discussions and content. I try to stay off of social media as much as I can for this reason. I value my privacy.
