Chapter 4 Summary:
I enjoyed seeing some familiar topics being covered in this chapter; coming from a background in business it was refreshing to see topics such as intellectual property. I also saw some new terms that I was previously not acquainted with. For example, a Digital Object Identifier (DOI) provides a permanent, unique link to a digital document, such as a journal article. I find this definition to be somewhat confusing because to me it sounds like a DOI is just another term for a link. Nonetheless it was still nice to learn something new. I also read that the two most widely used citation styles are APA and MLA, which is something I was familiar with. I wrote all of my papers in high school in MLA format, per the request of my high school teachers. At Wilkes, which is where I obtained my bachelors, I wrote all my papers in APA format since that is what my instructors requested. A portal site was a term that piqued my interest during my reading of the chapter since it sounded like a familiar term that I had encountered in my studies for the CompTIA Security+ certification exam. The term that I had learned in my studies was a Secure Web Gateway (SWG). However, after some research I have found that there are some significant differences between the two. A portal site is much more content focused and its primary function is to aggregate different kinds of information and resources in a user friendly manner. Anyone who has used Yahoo! Is familiar with a portal site. A SWG is much more focused on security and its primary function is to provide features like URL filtering, malware detection, data loss prevention (DLP), and content inspection to protect organizations from cyber threats. Interesting to see how terms can sound very similar yet be very different.
