Chapter 2 Summary:
I recently obtained my CompTIA Security+ Certification, yay! I was excited to see that some of the material that I had reviewed for the certification exam was also a part of this chapter. Protocols in particular were a concept that I became familiar with in order to better understand how the internet handles packets. Simple Mail Transfer Protocol (SMTP), Internet Message Access Protocol (IMAP), and Post Office Protocol (POP) are just a few of the protocols that I learned about in my studies. However, there were other things that I read about in this chapter that I have not previously seen in my Sec+ studies, such as the two parts of an email address. I was not aware that the local-part and domain part were separate parts of an email address. I learned a lot about emails in this chapter. I would say that my favorite thing that I learned about is that there is more than one effective strategy for controlling spam: using spam filters and unsubscribing from mailing lists. Spam filters, provided by most email services, help automatically identify and separate unwanted or suspicious emails, reducing the clutter in your inbox. Unsubscribing from mailing lists is another helpful approach, particularly for those annoying promotional emails that we all get from retail stores. Learning how to better manage my inbox was actually a very useful takeaway for me from this chapter. Over the years my email inbox has continued to grow more and more disorganized with all of the unwanted promotional marketing emails that I receive. I had always known that you could use spam filters to clean up an inbox but reading about it in this chapter caused me to actually take action towards organizing my email inbox.
